William2 Tisdell (James1) was born 09 April
1812 in West Bromwich, Staffordshire,
England, and died 10 June 1885 in Taree,
New South
Wales.
He married Catherine Scott 20 March 1840
in Macquarie County,
New South Wales, daughter of
James Scott and Janet
Scott. She was born 28 May 1815 in
Alloa, Clackmannanshire, Scotland,
and died 19 December 1922
in Taree, New South
Wales.
William
Tisdell ,
began his life in
England, born on 9th April 1812, the
son of James Tisdell
and Ann
Cole.
William was
Baptised on 26th April 1812 at Brierley Hill, Staffordshire, England.
As a youth, he
was apprenticed to James Bayley of Tipton, Staffordshire to learn the art of
Cabinetmaking.
At the
Staffordshire Assizes in 1831 at the age of about 19 years, William was convicted of
Robbery for the
theft of a Watch, the property of Mr Thomas Lee - the elder- at Wolverhampton.
William was
sentenced to Prison and hard labour for a period of 1 month with 14 days in
solitude.
At the
Staffordshire Assizes on the 23rd July 1833, William was again convicted of
Robbery. He
stole
sovereigns, other monies and two banknotes in the dwelling of James Bayley. He
pleaded
'Not Guilty'
yet was convicted by a jury.
William was
sentenced to transportation for life to the colony of New
South Wales aboard the
'Susan', which
left England on 10th March
1834.
On arrival in
Australia on 8th July 1834 -
174 years ago, William was assigned to work in irons on
the notorious
Goat Island in Sydney Harbour.
From here, in
c.1837, as his trade / calling was that of Cabinetmaker - "good", William
appears to
have been
'selected' to work for Major Archibald Clunes Innes at the historic Lake Innes
Estate at
Port
Macquarie.
Though not
proven, it is quite possible the Uniform Cabinet held at the Wingham Museum could
have been
crafted by William Tisdell.
At the Innes
Estate in 1838, William would meet Catherine Scott, the Innes family House and
Nursemaid.
